Why your children and grandchildren need you to write your life story

I often talk to writers who tell me they have a memoir in them, but they hesitate. They say things like, “Who would want to read about my life?” or “I’ve just lived a normal, quiet life. There’s nothing spectacular there.”
If that sounds like you, I’m here to give you a little nudge. Your life story isn’t just about the “spectacular” moments: the awards, the big career moves, or the world travels. It’s about the quiet wisdom you’ve gathered, the obstacles you’ve overcome, and the values you’ve held onto when things got tough.
Here at Accomplish Press, we call this The Legacy Project. It’s the intentional act of putting your life on paper, not for fame or fortune, but for the people who come after you. Your children and grandchildren don’t need a dry history book; they need your voice. They need to know where they came from so they can figure out where they’re going.
The myth of the “ordinary” life
We live in a world obsessed with influencers and celebrities, which can make us feel like our own lives are somehow “less than.” But I want you to consider this: your “ordinary” life is the foundation of your family’s history.
Think about your own grandparents. Wouldn’t you give anything to have a book written by them? To know what they were thinking when they bought their first home, or how they felt during a major historical event? Even the small details: what their kitchen smelled like, the jokes they told, the mistakes they made: would be priceless today.
Your stories are unique because no one else has seen the world through your eyes. When you write your memoir or life story, you are giving your family a map of their own identity. You are validating their roots.

Passing down more than just photos
We all have boxes of old photos tucked away in the attic or thousands of digital files on our phones. But a photo without a story is just a frozen moment. It doesn’t tell us why people were smiling or what happened five minutes after the shutter clicked.
By writing your memoir, you are passing down:
- Family history: The names, dates, and places that might otherwise be lost to time.
- Values and beliefs: What do you stand for? What have you learned about love, resilience, and faith? These are the “north stars” your grandchildren can use when they face their own storms.
- Lessons from failure: Most people don’t enjoy talking about their failures. But your “failures” are often the most helpful stories for the next generation. Knowing that Grandma struggled with her career or that Dad felt lost in his 30s makes those challenges feel manageable for a young person today.
- Your unique voice: There is a specific rhythm to the way you speak and think. Writing captures that in a way that nothing else can.
The psychological gift of family stories
Did you know that children who know more about their family history tend to have higher self-esteem and stronger emotional resilience? It’s true.
When a child understands that they belong to something bigger than themselves: a lineage of people who have survived, thrived, and navigated the complexities of life: it gives them a sense of security. They realize that if their ancestors could handle the challenges of the past, they can handle the challenges of the present.
Writing your memoir isn’t just a creative hobby; it’s a contribution to the mental and emotional well-being of your descendants. You are building a “narrative of resilience” for them to inherit.
Overcoming the “Where do I even start?” hurdle
You have decades of memories, and trying to organize them feels like trying to sort a mountain of laundry. It can be overwhelming!
Most people wait for a “perfect time” to start writing: when the kids are grown, when they retire, when they feel more “inspired.” But the perfect time doesn’t exist. There will always be a reason to put it off.
If you’re feeling stuck before you’ve even typed the first sentence, you aren’t alone. In fact, procrastination is the number one dream-killer for aspiring authors. That’s why I offer resources like our ebook, The Procrastination Cure, to help you break through those mental blocks and just start. You don’t have to write the whole book in a weekend. You just have to write one story at a time.
I also have another resource specifically for new memoir writers, Storytelling 101 for Memoir Writers, which is a guide that gives you a simple, proven framework to help you transform your memories into a powerful, unforgettable narrative.

Why a Writing Coach is your best ally
You might be thinking, “Can I do this on my own?” Of course you can. But trying to write a memoir is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s easy to start with a burst of energy and then lose steam when you hit the “middle-of-the-book slump” or realize you aren’t sure how to structure your chapters.
This is where book coaching comes in. As a coach, my job isn’t just to check your grammar (though we do look at the technical side!). My job is to be your partner in the process.
Working with an Accomplish Press coach gives you:
- Structure: We help you map out your life story so it flows logically and keeps the reader engaged.
- Accountability: It’s much harder to quit when you have a scheduled check-in and someone waiting to read your next chapter.
- Confidence: We help you silence that inner critic that says your story isn’t “good enough.”
- Professional guidance: From manuscript preparation to understanding the world of publishing, we guide you through every step.
Our Draft to Done Book Coaching programme is specifically designed for writers who are ready to stop talking about their book and finally see it in print. Whether you are writing a memoir, a legacy project for your family, or a non-fiction book to share your professional wisdom, we provide the framework to get you across the finish line.
Don’t let your story die with you
It sounds harsh, but it’s the reality. If you don’t write your story, it will eventually be forgotten. Your grandchildren might remember your name, but they won’t know your heart. They won’t know the “why” behind the life you lived.
You have the power to change that. You have the power to create a legacy that lasts for generations.
Writing is hard work. It requires patience, a bit of vulnerability, and a lot of dedication. But I promise you, the feeling of holding your finished book in your hands: and knowing your family will have it forever: is worth every single hour at the keyboard.
