Young Writers Summer Storytelling Camp

Young Writers Summer Storytelling Camp

with Tolulope Popoola, Author and Writing Coach

Hello parent! How will your child spend this summer?

The summer holidays can disappear quickly, with hours of scrolling, video games and YouTube. By September, many children return to school having lost confidence and forgotten some of the skills they worked so hard to build during the year. The Young Writers Summer Storytelling Camp offers something different: a week of creativity, learning and confidence-building. A week where your child creates something they can be proud of. Instead of consuming stories all summer, they’ll learn how to create their own!

A fun and inspiring summer programme for young writers aged 9 –15

  • Do you have a child who loves stories?

  • Perhaps they fill notebooks with ideas, invent fascinating characters, or dream of writing their own book one day.

  • Or maybe they enjoy writing but need encouragement, structure, and confidence to take their skills further.

The Young Writers Summer Storytelling Camp is designed to help children and teenagers unlock their creativity, strengthen their storytelling skills, and connect with other young people who share their passion for writing.

Over six exciting days, students will learn the building blocks of great storytelling while working on their own original writing projects in a fun, supportive, and encouraging environment.

Meet the Tutor

My name is Tolulope Popoola, and I’m an award-winning author, publisher, writing coach, and founder of Accomplish Press and The Creative Writing Academy. I have worked with aspiring writers of all ages and I’m passionate about helping young people discover the power of storytelling. I started writing when I was six years old, scribbling notes in my books, creating characters and even drawing them and making little comics.

I know what it feels like to have stories in your head and not know how to put them together properly. I also know how powerful it is when a child meets an adult who says: “Your ideas matter and I can support you to bring them to life.”

That’s what this camp is about: helping children discover the confidence to express themselves and the joy of bringing their imagination to life.

See what your young writer can achieve

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is seeing young writers grow in confidence and discover what they are capable of creating. Many of the children who join our programmes begin with a simple love of stories. Some are shy about sharing their work. Others have lots of ideas but don’t know how to develop them.

Here are just a few examples of stories written by young writers who have participated in our creative writing programmes.

Disaster at the Fair by Zikora

The Superpower by Samar

Treasures of the Mystery Island by Yuvraj

The Note by Aruniha

The Mysterious Stranger by Serena

The Whispering Woods by Amy

Every published story here began with an idea and every confident writer started as a beginner. The goal of this camp isn’t to create perfect writers. It’s to help children discover their creativity, strengthen their storytelling skills, and gain the confidence to share their ideas with the world.

Who knows? The next story featured here could be your child’s!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What age group is the camp suitable for?

The Young Writers Summer Storytelling Camp is designed for children and teenagers aged 9 –15. Activities are tailored to accommodate different ages and levels of writing experience.

Does my child need previous writing experience?

No. The programme is suitable for beginners and more experienced young writers.

Does my child need to love writing already?

Not necessarily. The camp is ideal for children who enjoy stories, reading, creativity, and imagination. Some children arrive with a passion for writing, while others simply enjoy making up stories and benefit from learning how to develop their ideas more confidently.

What if my child has never attended a writing class before?

No problem at all. The camp is suitable for both beginners and more experienced young writers. We explain concepts clearly, provide plenty of guidance, and ensure every child feels included regardless of their starting point.

What will my child leave with at the end of the camp?

By the end of the week, your child will have developed stronger storytelling skills, greater confidence in their writing abilities, new creative ideas, and a piece of original writing they can be proud of.

How much individual attention will my child receive?

Although the camp is delivered in a group setting, we intentionally keep numbers manageable so that every child has opportunities to ask questions, receive feedback, and share their work. We are committed to ensuring each participant feels seen, encouraged, and supported throughout the week.

Will sessions be recorded?

Yes, the sessions will take place via Zoom and will be recorded.

How long are the daily sessions?

Four hours in total, with 30 minutes break time and writing time in-between.

Will students receive feedback on their writing?

Yes. Participants will receive encouragement and constructive feedback throughout the programme.

What does my child need to participate?

Students will need a reliable internet connection, a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet, and access to Zoom. They should also have a notebook and pen nearby for writing exercises and brainstorming activities.

What if my child struggles with spelling or grammar?

The focus of the camp is creativity, storytelling, and self-expression. Children do not need perfect spelling or grammar to participate. We encourage them to get their ideas onto the page first, while gradually introducing techniques that help improve their writing skills. The goal is to build confidence, not perfection.

Is this camp suitable for a child who wants to write a book?

Absolutely. While the camp focuses on storytelling skills rather than completing a full book, it provides an excellent foundation for children who dream of becoming authors. Many young writers use the ideas, characters, and stories they develop during the programme as the starting point for longer writing projects in the future.
