Summer Creative Writing Workshops (Gbagada)

It’s been another busy couple of weeks here @ Accomplish Press. The holiday writing clubs in Lagos are still ongoing! We’ve just concluded the two-week Creative Writing session with the children at the Gbagada Workshop. The children have had a great time, writing both fiction stories and non-fiction essays during the workshop. And there were definitely some bright young future authors! It’s been a joy and a pleasure to work with them, and I really appreciate everyone who signed up for the workshops.

The first week, we learnt about writing fiction – and then we put what we learnt into practice. The children wrote several stories which I marked and gave them feedback on. We also got to read our stories out loud to the class, and then they got feedback from their peers. Some of them were initially shy to read in front of the class, but we got there in the end 🙂

In the second week, we learnt about essay writing. The children learnt about two types of essays, and we practised writing essays on various topics that they could relate to. One essay required them to describe an experience, and one essay required them to answer a question, think critically, and arrive at a conclusion on their own. I’m pleased to say they all did very well, so a big well done to all the participants of the nonfiction writing week! We also got to read our essays to the class, which was (again) great for our public speaking skills.

Thursday was Spelling Bee day, and the children were put in groups according to their ages, and asked to spell words of varying difficulty. Some of them did very well, and some of them made a good attempt. Please encourage them to read widely, and practice spelling drills, so that they can continue to improve.

And on Friday, we had a recap of everything that we have learnt, and wrote a final story. So that’s all the fun we had in Gbagada! You can view some of our photos on Facebook here:
